Career Specialist Dana Marlow reports on her customer. “In January 2018, Candace came to Man-Tra-Con seeking a career in healthcare. She had been receiving food stamps and support from the Department of Human Services through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. She had recently received her GED after completing the GED program at John A. Logan College (JALC),” Dana explains.
“Since her divorce, Candace had been struggling financially and was trying to improve her situation by following a career path that would allow her to support herself and her two children. Candace researched many career options and decided she would like to work in the medical field. With career development assistance from Man-Tra-Con and WIOA training funds for tuition, mileage, books, and fees, she was able to achieve her goal and enroll in the Medical Assistant program at JALC,” Dana reports.
“The Medical Assistant program was perfect for Candace. It was a short-term program that she was able to quickly complete and get back to work. While enrolled in the CMA program, Candace excelled in all her classes and finished with a 4.0 grade point average,” Dana adds.
“In June 2019, Shawnee Healthcare in Carterville hired Candace for a full-time Medical Assistant position, paying $15.00 per hour. Candace was really excited to be able to get out the “system” and be able to support herself and her children on her own. She loves her job and she loves being able to help people on a daily basis,” Dana reports.
